CLASS TITLE:  EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETER I

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

            Apply sign and/or silent vocalization systems to facilitate communication between hearing impaired students and faculty, staff and other students.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Educational Interpreter I incumbents interpret audible classroom activities for hearing impaired students.  The Educational Interpreter II classification trains and provides work direction to Educational Interpreter I incumbents and provides comprehensive assessments and evaluations in addition to performing the regular duties of the classification.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

 

Use American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English or other recognized systems to facilitate communication between hearing impaired students and others.

 

Attend classes with hearing impaired students to interpret lectures, discussions and other audible classroom activities.

 

Interpret into spoken English the questions and verbal presentations of hearing impaired students.

 

Assist hearing impaired students in communicating with faculty, staff, administrators and others.

 

Confer with and others special needs and concerns of individual hearing impaired students.

 

Interpret at meetings, conferences, appointments and during other educational activities.

 

Interpret technical lectures and discussions related to a wide variety of community college courses.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English and other recognized modes of communication with the deaf and hearing impaired.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Basics of various subjects taught at the community college.

Values, behavior and language of the American deaf culture.

Legal rights of the deaf and hearing impaired.

Code of Ethics for Registry Interpreters of Deaf (RID).

 

ABILITY TO:

Facilitate communication between hearing impaired students and faculty, staff and other students.

Interpret in both sign to voice and voice to sign.

Utilize American Sign language, Signed English, signed Exact English and other recognized systems of communication.

Relate well to deaf and hearing impaired individuals.

Attend classes with hearing impaired students and interpret classroom lectures, discussions and activities.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

Any combination equivalent to:  high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and some demonstrated experience in interpreting for deaf and hearing impaired individuals.

 

LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS:

 

Completion of Basic Interpreter Training Program.
